#Teatime with Robecca Austin and an excerpt from a slow-burn alien romance

Do you enjoy a good slow burn with your romance? I hope you do! This week, we are reading an excerpt from Kayelle Allen’s book. It’s an alien romance, y’all. I hope you enjoy it.

Meet the heroine from Crystal Clear Truth

Though she ached to slam it, Shohn Lexius eased her office door shut, then took a civil and polite step back. Hissing, she swiped the air with her claws and stuck the smallest ones straight up.

Claws retracted, she stalked to the narrow window, braced her hands on the sill and pressed her forehead to the glass. The spring sun offered no heat. And why? Because on human worlds, builders installed special glass so their precious little sun wouldn’t hurt their precious fragile skin.

Humans. Honestly.

Oh, all right, she’d admit human skin was sleek. Nice to stroke. She even liked its smoothness against her tongue, but come on. Would it hurt to let in a little heat?

Humans protected themselves from such trivial ‘dangers’ as sunbeams. On this world, indoor temperatures never fluctuated. And forget opening a window.

Not on the seventieth floor of the city’s tallest building.

She laid back her ears, aching for the fresh air of her homeworld. The freedom of a hynder beneath her, galloping full speed in sunshine along the beach. Charging through the forests, cantering in the rain. A purr rumbled in her chest at the memories.

Working up an honest sweat mucking out stalls, tending the stock, shoulder to shoulder with family, everyone laughing and singing. Accepting her word that when she asked for something, she should get it. No one telling her how much money she could spend or asking why she needed it. She reined in her thoughts. That was her old self talking.

The person of privilege her family had reared her to be, not the fighter for equality she’d become. Sometimes, though, living off-world rankled. Here she was, a Kin warrior with the honor blade at her side to prove it, stuck working in a human-oriented office on the capitol planet of what she’d once considered her people’s enemy.

Well, she’d brought this on herself, hadn’t she? She’d left her homeworld of her own accord. It was her fault she spent every day with round-eyed humans whose ears could hear a third less than her own. A race oblivious to the overpowering reek of its own species.

A Kin’s sense of kahlah caught the scent of human lies no matter how small. A handy skill during interrogations. She knew before humans spoke if they would try to pull a fast one, and they all tried. As for the tartness of their fear, well, a clawed Kin had better get used to that pretty fast, because a fanged smile was no help whatsoever.

A knock at the door pulled her back to the here and now. She picked up a notereader tablet and fanned herself, dispersing any scent of frustration she might have released.

After straightening her green-and-black uniform jacket, she squared her shoulders. “Come.”

Crystal Clear Truth

How can you trust when your own truth is a lie?

Shohn has only one goal: live a lie-filled life undercover. The elite head of security permits herself no family ties and few friends. But when firestorm scientist Joe needs help to locate his birth mother, and hires Shohn, she begins to rethink her rule of isolation.

Unknown to them, their intensive search triggers an alert that brings powerful, dark forces into play. Every attempt to uncover the truth results in more cover ups. But why? Who is this young woman, and who is the unknown person or power foiling Shohn and Joe’s attempts to find her?

But maybe the better question is–what is she?

#Teatime character interview with Robecca and Sara Carlisle (protagonist in You Can’t Hurry Love by A.N Verebes)

Hello, Sara. Welcome to Tea Time!

Hi! My name is Sara and my story is told in You Can’t Hurry Love.

Tell us two things about yourself that the reader doesn’t know.

  1. My parents’ names were Patrick and Rebecca. I’ve always thought I’d incorporate them into my kids’ names somehow.
  2. My favourite colour is bright yellow, which may come as a surprise because I don’t really wear it much, and my house is all decorated in neutral tones.

How are things going / progressing since telling your story?

Really well! I don’t want to give much away about our story, but I don’t think it’s much of a surprise that Charlie and I got our Happily Ever After. Still, this isn’t the last the series has seen of us, even though the tale of how we got together has been told. Our lives are interconnected with all of our friends and family, and there are definitely some more surprises lurking around the corner; I can feel it!

What do you think Charlie’s love language is?

Charlie’s definitely more emotive around me than anyone else, but he still shows his love more through actions than flowery language, and that’s just fine by me. He’s as impulsive as ever, so we’re often going on impromptu getaways, or he’s bringing home little gifts, or fixing things around the house without having to be asked.

What has Charlie done lately that made you blush?

It used to take a lot to make me blush, but when Charlie sends me sweet, supportive messages -especially on days he knows I’m having a tough time or getting swept away by my anxieties- and reminds me that I’m strong, independent, and capable, and that I inspire him? That’s when I blush.

Robecca: I love that! Thank you so much for spending time with us. We had so much fun getting to know you.

Sara Carlisle and Charlie Rhodes are complete opposites. Oil and water. Chalk and cheese.

Before Sara even meets Charlie, she hates him. He’s insulted her best friend -a woman Sara considers family- and that is unforgivable. In person he proves to be just as obnoxious and insufferable as she’d anticipated. And, as far as she’s concerned, the fact that he’s tall and muscular with an accent to die for is not enough to redeem him. Charlie Rhodes is an arrogant A–hole (with a capital A!) and that’s all there is to it!

For his part, Charlie thinks Sara is a conceited pain in the arse. A prissy princess to the nth degree. It becomes his prerogative to get under her skin for the sheer pleasure of riling her up. He feels genuine enjoyment in the face of her frustration, and he makes no secret of it. Besides, she gives as good as she gets!

Fundamentally opposed in every way, it’s obvious to those around them that they’re not going to get along.

But unfortunately, thanks to their respective families, they are stuck in each other’s lives for the foreseeable future. Being civil is as good as it is going to get…or is it?

When their relationship turns from reluctant acquaintances to red hot lovers, they find it’s good.

Really good.

What could possibly go wrong?

In a slow-burn romance that follows hot on the heels of Handle With Care*, Sara and Charlie discover that you really can’t rush romance.

*Both Handle With Care and You Can’t Hurry Love can be read as standalone novels in the expanding Jukebox Collection series.

Excerpt (Chapter Two) – Rated G

Charlie bristled on Everett’s behalf, but apparently so did Sara. She set her cutlery down with more force than necessary and, with exaggerated patience, responded to Roger, “Again: not everyone feels the need to blatantly splash their cash around.” She looked up and across the table at Charlie, demanding, “Back me up here.”

Roger spoke before Charlie could. “No offence,” (With that, Charlie knew that he would very much take offence to the next words that came out of the man’s mouth.) “but Old Mate here’s a builder, right? That’s not exactly on the same level.”

The sound of frustration Sara made at the back of her throat almost had Charlie chuckling. “Maybe not the same as Everett, no,” she argued –bizarrely– on Charlie’s behalf, now folding her arms across her chest as she stared down her boyfriend, “but I’m willing to bet he’s just as financially comfortable as you are. Possibly even more. But that shouldn’t change how valid his opinion on the topic is either way.”

Her tone was heated now. Charlie felt a little badly for Roger, who probably began the whole conversation with good, if misguided, intentions. “Look,” he said diplomatically, attempting to ease the tension, “I can see both sides here. As a kid, I always thought if I had the dosh, I’d live the high life. But that’s not actually me, and it’s not Rhett, either. But it doesn’t make enjoying your money wrong if that’s what make you happy.”

“That’s the point I was trying to make,” Sara huffed. Charlie was almost worried that Sara would lecture him about mansplaining the topic –which he felt he might have done a little– but her boyfriend, for all his book smarts, seemed a bit thick witted, so putting it into different words might have helped.

Roger was silent for a moment. “Well, yeah, alright,” he finally acknowledged, reaching for his glass of wine. “I won’t pretend to understand it, but I see what you’re saying.”

As he raised his drink to his mouth, Sara rolled her eyes and mouthed ‘No he doesn’t’ across the table at Charlie, who snorted and then covered the sound with a cough.

“You alright there, Charlie?” Everett asked, giving him a thump to his back as he reclaimed his seat beside his brother. In a lower voice he added, “Don’t tell me you’ve been arguing again.”

“I have been on my best behaviour,” Charlie assured him, catching Sara’s gaze and nodding in acknowledgement.

Perhaps, he thought to himself, being civil wasn’t completely out of their reach.
