Time Travel Historical Romance

Guest Blog Post by Maggie Blackbird

What inspired me to write Born for This, book one in the Maizemerized series, a time travel historical romance?  Well, the idea came about by an author friend.  She asked me and two other authors if we’d be interested in writing something for Halloween that involved a corn maze and a scarecrow that we could pitch to our publisher eXtasy Books.

Since Mandaamin is corn in Ojibway, and also the corn spirit of the People, I knew right away what I was going to write, because the proposed time of the novels is set during Halloween, and the Ojibway celebrate their fall feasts around this same time, and one of the main foods served is corn.  As for the scarecrow, I knew he’d make a great Mandaamin.

So the series was born for me LOL.  There will be two other books coming out.  One involving the heroine’s older brother and another starring the heroine’s younger sister.  I hope you enjoy Edie Whitecrow’s adventure into the past as she meets her Ojibway ancestors and the man she keeps dreaming about since childhood.

One of the three authors did submit their novel with mine.  D.S. Dehel’s Nine for a Kiss was released the same day on October 29, 2021.  The other two had other obligations and had to back out.

I am much obliged to my author friend who suggested the idea, even though her novel won’t come out until March of 2022.  Her idea made me become very creative with my storyline and how I could tie it in with Ojibway lore.

As for the fourth author who didn’t make the deadline, she did find a home for her story Eternity’s Gamble.

I hope you enjoy the first book in the series as much as I enjoyed writing Edie Whitecrow’s story.

Born for This – Maizemerized, Book One

She’s always been obsessed with her ancestors, and now he’s offering her a chance to live with them…forever.

Blurb:  Second-year university student Edie Whitecrow gobbles up each course on Indigenous studies.  If only she could experience the lives of her Anishinaabe ancestors instead of reading about them.  On her way to a Halloween party decked out as a historical Ojibway maiden, she spies a corn maze in a spot known to be barren.

A scarecrow figure beckons Edie to enter with the enticing offer of making her biggest wish come true.  She jumps at the chance and finds herself in the past, face to face with the man who haunts her dreams—the handsome brave Thunder Bear.  He claims he’s spent twelve years waiting for Gitche Manidoo to send her to him.

Life in the eighteenth century isn’t what Edie romanticized about, though.  When her conscience is tested, she must choose between the modern day or the world of her descendants—where the man she was created for resides.

EXCERPT:

Edie shucked aside the phone. She shut off her car and got out. A hint of a breeze ruffled the fringes on the bottom of her doeskin dress. There hadn’t been a smidgen of wind earlier, even all day, so why now?

The breeze seemed to push on her backside in the direction of the scarecrow, as if Animkiig, the Thunderbirds, were guiding her forward. Impossible. There was no storm. Not one cloud lazily floated in the midnight-blue sky.

Movement came from the scarecrow. Its hanging head creaked in her direction.

A shock of fright gripped Edie by the spine. She tried to halt, but the breeze continued to nudge her forward, as if reassuring her there was nothing to fear.

She shuffled her moccasin-wrapped feet forward. The alarm didn’t dissipate. She bit down on her finger, nibbling at the skin of her index so she wouldn’t bite her long nails she’d had manicured for the party.

The scarecrow raised its hand and curled one bony finger at her.

Ghastly. From what she could see, there wasn’t any muscle on the being, only bone and flesh. The tattered clothing hung on the creature that lacked anything firm beneath to fill out the material of flannel and denim. The shredded shirt and pants covered the scarecrow from head to toe. Even the straw hat hid its face.

Edie slapped her hand to her mouth. Could this be Mandaamin, the corn spirit of the Anishinaabeg who’d sacrificed himself centuries ago to feed the People? Of course. Who else could summon a maze from nowhere? Who else could call the Thunderbirds to coax her forward, even when terror racked her body?

Suddenly, the grip of dread holding her spine vanished.

The scarecrow kept curling its finger.

Mandaamin, is it you?” she called out.

The long-sleeved plaid shirt and jeans ruffled in the slight breeze. The scarecrow pointed at what was the entrance to the maze.

#Tea time with Robecca and #Lady Susanna Beckinworth née Lorican, from #Forever Winter

Will their love withstand the storm to come?

Sneak Peek from Forever Winter:

Oh, my. The air in her lungs froze as he teased and tasted her lips in a decadent, feather-soft kiss. She moaned into his mouth and closed her eyes.

“You are so beautiful.” He trailed his lips down her neck.

“Camden.” She gasped and gripped his broad shoulders for an anchor in the storm of bliss threatening to sweep her under. Spots dotted her vision like twinkling stars peeking through dark clouds. She blinked several times and nodded to the entryway. “We must control ourselves. Anyone could see.” The smirk crawling up his cheeks clenched something deep and primal inside her. She breathed harder and inched closer to his heaving chest.

“Let them. We are betrothed. Two people in love who are about to wed are expected to kiss.”

“Kiss, yes,” she whispered. “You, my lord, make love with your lips.” Heat flamed in her cheeks and surely reddened her face.

Camden laughed and trailed his fingers up her bare arm to the puffed sleeve. “Do I? You have never admitted that before.”

“There are some things you should not be privy to.”

“Really? I’m honored that my bride appreciates the way I kiss. If she didn’t, what kind of man would that make me?”

She stepped away and smacked his biceps. “There are eyes and ears everywhere, Camden. Especially today. I’m positive the servants are already gossiping that we are spending time together on the one day we should keep our distance. It is bad luck.” And since their chaperone had left them unaccompanied, she expected another servant to arrive any minute, courtesy of her mother.

Camden drew her back into his arms and brushed his lips across her hairline. “I make my own luck. We control our destiny, Susanna; no one else. Besides, you have nothing to worry about. The one activity we shared truly worth gossiping about will never reach the light of day.”

Meet Lady Susanna Beckinworth née Lorican, the heroine in Forever Winter.

Robecca: “Thank you so much, Lady Susanna Beckinworth née Lorican for taking tea with me. I do enjoy the rose garden on a perfect day. Well then, shall we start with the question everyone is dying to find out?

“How are things progressing since telling your story?”

Lady Susanna Beckinworth née Lorican: “Splendidly. My story took place all in one day—my wedding day—and everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong. I’m still in shock over it. Every young woman of my acquaintance has dreamed of her wedding since she was little, but the reality of my wedding day was a nightmare. But now, knowing what I do, I wouldn’t change anything. Camden and I proved our love to each other and showed our friends and family that nothing will ever stand between us. Our deep bond set the foundation of our marriage, and if our horrible wedding day couldn’t destroy us, nothing will.”

Robecca: “Oh my, how exciting indeed! What do you love most about Lord Beckinworth?”

Lady Susanna Beckinworth née Lorican: “Oh, where to start? I’ve adored Camden since we were children. He’s eight years older than I am and the best friend of my older brothers. His parents and mine were great friends. Though he’d spent some on the Continent as some carefree rakes do, he returned home to England after his parents passed on and saved his crumbling family business from ruin. He’s now responsible, considerate, and appreciative of my bluestocking ideals. He respects me as a woman and his partner, and I couldn’t love him more for it.”

Robecca: “Quite the charm! But every lady reading the gossip pages wants to know what do you think his love language is?”

Lady Susanna Beckinworth née Lorican: “My, I can’t believe you asked that. *Susanna fans herself* Camden is a passionate man, and I’m not immune to his charms. Nor is he to mine. Though our story is of the sweet variety, Camden’s kisses have always made me swoon—as you’ll read in Forever Winter.”

Robecca: “What mundane task have you mastered?”

Lady Susanna Beckinworth née Lorican: “Camden owns and operates a cotton mill, and I’ve taken over the books. It’s an easy thing, really, since I had managed my father’s farm accounts for the past few years. I enjoy working with numbers, so I wouldn’t call the task mundane, but since the birth of my son, I don’t have as much time as I would like to delve through the books. Luckily, my assistant is a godsend. He’s handling the day-to-days while I oversee the monthly statements. Once my little boy grows older, I intend to take over the books in full.”

Lady Susanna Beckinworth née Lorican: “Thank you for the tea, Robecca, and the cookies are fabulous. We should definitely meet again for another chat.”

Robecca: “I couldn’t agree more! Lord Camden in Forever Winter is splendid!”
